Right Foot Front

Release date: 13 August 2024

On the cover: Michael Salas, by Herve Locus

This six-track E.P. draws deep inspiration from the vibrant skateboard culture of New Haven, Connecticut and showcases a fusion of genres, including drum'n'bass, jazz, and lounge. "Right Foot Front" takes listeners on a sonic journey through the lens of New Haven’s skateboarding community. The E.P. was inspired by a silent documentary filmed by artists Kulimushi Barongozi and Jisu Sheen at the Second Floor Hardware School, which captures the essence and passion of local skateboarders. The documentary, available on YouTube here, serves as a visual companion to the E.P., offering a glimpse into the lives of those who inspired its creation.

The E.P. features dynamic collaborations with a roster of up-and-coming artists, including rapper Dogman Rukus, spoken word artists Egypt English and Ms. Latrice P. Young, and singers Lou Alexander and Kleidi Buroz. Each track weaves together the rhythmic intensity of drum'n'bass with the soulful expressions of jazz and lounge music, creating a diverse and captivating listening experience.

Reflecting on the creation of "Right Foot Front," Ionne shares, "My favorite lyrics on the E.P. are from the track ‘Right Foot Front,’ which speaks to the power and freedom found in skateboarding. It's about embracing the rhythm of life and the exhilaration that comes from moving forward, both on and off the board."

The cover art, photographed by Herve Locus, features skater Michael Salas, symbolizing the energy and spirit of the New Haven skate scene. Ionne extends his gratitude to the skaters who contributed to the documentary, particularly Steve Roberts, J Joseph, Isaiah, and Indigaux, whose stories helped shape the E.P.'s narrative.

From "Right Foot Front":

I could roll with the rhythm

And rock with the waves

Then I could sail into the future

Like another day

A haze

A blaze

A craze

A phase

I could leave you all in a daze

Or I could come back to save

Like a messiah
